Leadership without formation is like a riverbed without water — the channel is there, but the life-giving current is absent.
At Living Water Network, spiritual formation is not a module in our curriculum. It is the curriculum. Everything else — cohort community, mentorship, counseling — flows from and flows back to the central question: Is this leader becoming more like Jesus?
What Spiritual Formation Actually Is
Spiritual formation is the lifelong, intentional process of cooperating with the Holy Spirit to be conformed into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). It is not primarily about what you do for God. It is about who you are becoming with God.
The great Dallas Willard described it as training the whole person — body, soul, mind, and will — to respond naturally and effortlessly to Kingdom realities. Like an athlete who trains so that right action becomes instinct, the spiritually formed leader acts from a deep inner reservoir of Christ-shaped character.
Why Leaders Need It Most
There is a painful irony in ministry and marketplace leadership: the higher you rise, the less accountability you often have — and the more your inner life matters.
Leaders shape culture. A leader who is anxious forms anxious teams. A leader who is driven by insecurity breeds competition. But a leader rooted in the love of God, whose identity is secure in Christ, creates space for others to flourish.
This is why we never separate leadership development from personal formation at LWN. You cannot sustainably lead others somewhere you have not been yourself.
What Formation Looks Like in Practice
Formation happens through spiritual disciplines — practices that create space for God to work in us:
- Silence and solitude — learning to be with God without an agenda
- Scripture meditation — not just reading, but dwelling
- Prayer — conversational, honest, persistent
- Community — being known and accountable
- Service — giving without recognition
These are not add-ons for the spiritually elite. They are the ordinary means by which ordinary leaders become extraordinary instruments in the hands of God.
